CFMoto zforce with text clutching 101: belt care, venting, tuning basics

CFMOTO ZForce - Clutching 101: Belt Care, Venting, Tuning Basics

Cooler clutches, longer belt life, smoother takeoff. A little tuning goes a long way on the ZForce.

A well matched CFMOTO ZForce clutch kit, the right ZForce belt, and proper belt venting can turn a pretty good machine into something that feels dialed everywhere you ride. This guide covers clutch components, belt types and care, venting, clutch tuning basics like weights, springs, and helix, setups for common terrain, tools, install tips, and a simple maintenance schedule.

Clutch components 101

Your ZForce uses a CVT, continuously variable transmission. Two main clutches and a belt do the work.

  • Primary clutch, bolted to the crank
    • Contains weights and a primary spring
    • Controls engagement RPM, when you start to move
    • Affects how quickly RPM climbs as you accelerate
  • Secondary clutch, on the transmission side
    • Uses a secondary spring and a helix with angled ramps
    • Controls backshift, RPM recovery under load
    • Also affects engine braking feel
  • Belt, the link between them
    • Transfers all power
    • Prefers clean, dry sheaves and proper tension

A CFMOTO ZForce clutch kit usually includes a matched set of primary weights and springs plus a secondary spring and helix tuned for your tire size, elevation, and terrain. You are not just adding parts, you are changing how the machine uses its power.

Belt types and care

The belt is the fuse in the system. It is cheaper and easier to replace than clutches or a transmission, but failure still hurts when it happens on the trail.

Belt types you will see

  • OEM style ZForce belt
    • Balanced for cost and performance
    • Good for stock tires and moderate use
  • Heavy duty and high temperature belts
    • Built for higher temps, heavier loads, bigger tires
    • Often stiffer, engagement feel may change slightly
    • Ideal for dunes, mud, and steep climbs when matched with proper clutching

Belt care basics

  • Keep sheaves clean and oil free, avoid overspray from lube or cleaner
  • Never pry belts off with screwdrivers or sharp tools
  • Avoid long power braking or slow crawling in high range, heat builds fast
  • After an overheat, smoke or a strong burnt rubber smell, cool down and inspect for glazing or chunking

Venting and cooling options

Belt venting is one of the easiest ways to extend belt life on a ZForce.

Fresh air in, hot air out

  • Add or improve intake and exhaust vents on the clutch housing
  • Avoid random holes that let in mud and water, use purpose built vent kits

Ducting and snorkels

For mud riders, snorkels raise air inlets but also add restriction.

  • Restriction means more heat if you do not adjust clutching and driving style
  • Plan on re clutching if you add long snorkel runs and big tires

Primary and secondary basics: springs, weights, helix

Primary: weights and spring

  • Weights: Heavier weights increase squeeze at a given RPM; lighter weights let RPM rise more quickly.
  • Primary spring: Affects engagement RPM and how fast RPM builds off the line.

Secondary: spring and helix

  • Secondary spring: Controls belt squeeze and backshift.
  • Helix: Ramp angles control how the secondary reacts to load.
Quick tuning rule: change one thing at a time and test. A quality CFMOTO ZForce clutch kit matches components so you are not guessing.

Setups for mud, sand, and hills

Terrain Engagement target Helix and spring notes Belt notes
Trails Moderate Quick backshift for hills OEM equivalent
Sand and dunes Higher Hold RPM steady on long pulls High temp belt / Extra venting
Mud Lower Strong backshift, avoid bogging Heavy duty belt

Tools and install tips

Handy tools

  • Model specific clutch puller
  • Belt removal tool or spreader
  • Torque wrench
  • Soft brush and Scotch Brite pad

Maintenance schedule

Every 25 to 50 hours

  • Remove the clutch cover and inspect the belt for glazing or cracks.
  • Check sheaves for rubber buildup.
  • Verify vent inlets and outlets are clear.

ZForce clutching and belts FAQs

Why do I smell rubber on long climbs?
That is belt slip. Common causes are using too high a gear, mismatched clutching, or poor venting. Use low range and consider a tuned clutch kit.
