Polaris Tech Tip: How to Check Polaris Wheel Bearings and Suspension Bushings

Tech Tip: How to Check Polaris Wheel Bearings and Suspension Bushings

Tight suspension and smooth bearings are what give your Polaris that "new machine" feel. Over time, high-speed trail riding and water crossings can wash away grease and introduce grit, leading to "slop" in your steering and suspension. Left unchecked, a failed bearing can seize, potentially damaging your axle or hub beyond repair.

Step 1: The Wheel Bearing "Shake" Test

To check your bearings, you’ll need to get the weight off the wheels using a jack. Once the tire is off the ground, follow these steps:

  • The 12 and 6 Hold: Place one hand at the top (12 o’clock) and one at the bottom (6 o’clock) of the tire. Shake the wheel firmly in and out.
  • Analyze the Movement: If you feel a "click" or see the wheel moving independently of the steering knuckle, your wheel bearing is shot.
  • The 9 and 3 Hold: Place your hands at the sides of the tire and shake. Movement here can indicate a bad bearing, but it may also point to worn tie-rod ends or steering rack issues.

Step 2: Inspecting Suspension Bushings (A-Arms)

Your A-arms rely on bushings to pivot smoothly. These are often the first things to wear out after a season of muddy riding.

  • Visual Inspection: Look for gaps between the A-arm and the frame tabs. If the arm isn't centered or you see orange "rust dust" around the pivot point, the bushing has disintegrated.
  • The Pry Bar Test: Use a small pry bar to gently move the A-arm at the frame mount. If the arm shifts up and down or side to side, it’s time for a Genuine Polaris OEM Bushing Kit.
  • Squeak Check: If your suspension squeaks like an old mattress every time you hit a bump, the bushings are likely dry and friction is eating away at the inner pivot tubes.
Note: ⚠️ Always check your owner’s manual or the fitment tab on witchdoctors.com to make sure this part fits your specific year, make, and model before ordering.

Pro Tip: Greasing for Longevity

Many Polaris OEM components come with grease zerks. Don't ignore them! Giving each pivot point a pump of high-quality waterproof grease after a pressure wash will force out water and contaminants, doubling the life of your bushings and bearings.
