Tech Tip: How to Inspect Polaris CV Axles and Boots

Your Polaris CV (Constant Velocity) axles are responsible for transferring power from the differentials to the wheels while allowing the suspension to travel up and down and the front wheels to steer. The "life" of a CV joint is entirely dependent on the rubber boot that protects it. Once that boot is torn, the specialized grease inside escapes, and trail grit enters—leading to a rapid and noisy failure of the internal bearings.

Step 1: The "Visual Tear" Inspection

The rubber boots are the most vulnerable part of your drivetrain. They are easily torn by sticks, corn stalks, or even build-up of heavy, dried mud.

  • Check the Folds: Rotate the axle and look deep into the "bellows" or folds of the rubber. Cracks often start here where the rubber flexes the most.
  • Look for "Grease Splatter": If you see thick, dark grease splattered on the A-arms, shock springs, or frame, the boot has a hole. Even a tiny "pinhole" will sling all the grease out due to centrifugal force.
  • The Result: If you catch a tear early and the joint is still quiet, you can often save the axle by installing a Genuine Polaris OEM CV Boot Repair Kit.

Step 2: Testing for "Clicking" and Joint Wear

If the grease has been gone for a while, the internal ball bearings and "cage" will begin to wear, creating excessive play.

  • The Turning Test: Drive the machine in a tight circle (in 4WD if testing the front). Listen for a rhythmic "click-click-click" sound. This indicates the outer CV joint is worn and clicking under load.
  • The Shake Test: Grab the axle bar and try to move it up and down near the joints. There should be very little vertical play. If the joint "clunks" inside the housing, the bearings are shot.
  • The Result: A clicking axle is a ticking time bomb. Replace it with a Genuine Polaris OEM Complete Axle Assembly to avoid being stranded with a broken shaft.

Step 3: Checking Axle "Plunge" and Binding

As the suspension moves, the axle must be able to get longer and shorter (plunge). This happens in the inner joint (closest to the differential).

  • The Movement Check: With the machine on a jack and the suspension fully extended, ensure the axle isn't "binding" or pulling out of the differential.
  • The "Pop-Out": If you find an axle has "popped out" of the differential, check the small wire C-clip at the end of the splines. These clips can weaken over time, allowing the axle to slide out under heavy suspension flex.

Pro Tip: The Post-Ride Wash

"A hyper-realistic, close-up shot of a mud-caked CV boot on a Polaris General UTV. The black rubber accordion-style boot is heavily splattered with thick, wet, textured brown mud and trail debris. The surrounding suspension components, including the A-arms and axle shaft, are also covered in wet trail dirt. The #1 enemy of CV boots is dried mud. When mud dries on the rubber, it becomes hard and abrasive. As the suspension moves, that hard mud acts like a saw, cutting through the rubber folds. Always spray the mud out of your A-arms and off your CV boots after every ride to keep the rubber supple and tear-free!
