Tech Tip: How to Inspect Polaris UTV/ATV Brake Pads and Rotors

Off-road riding is incredibly hard on braking systems. Mud, sand, and grit act like sandpaper, grinding away at your pads and rotors every time you hit the pedal. Regular inspection is the only way to prevent "metal-on-metal" contact, which can lead to brake failure and expensive caliper damage.

Step 1: Inspecting Brake Pad Thickness

You don't always have to remove the wheels to check your pads, but it helps. Look through the inspection window on the brake caliper to see the remaining friction material.

  • The 1mm Rule: If the friction material (the part that touches the rotor) is 1mm thick or less, replace the pads immediately.
  • Uneven Wear: If one pad is significantly thinner than the other on the same caliper, you may have a sticking caliper piston or a bent slide pin that needs attention.

Step 2: Checking Rotor Condition

Run your finger (when the machine is cool!) across the surface of the brake rotor. It should feel smooth and flat.

  • Scoring & Grooving: Deep "rings" or grooves in the rotor mean debris has been trapped between the pad and the disc. If the grooves are deep enough to catch a fingernail, the rotor should be replaced.
  • Heat Discoloration: If the rotor looks blue or purple, it has been severely overheated. This "glazing" reduces braking friction and can cause the rotor to warp.
  • Thinning: Rotors have a minimum thickness stamped on the hub. If they are below this measurement, they can no longer dissipate heat safely.

The "Squeal" Test

If you hear a high-pitched screeching or a grinding "crunch" when braking, your pads are likely gone. Modern Genuine Polaris OEM Brake Pads are designed to provide consistent feel, but they can't protect you once the friction material is worn to the backing plate.

Note: ⚠️ Always check your owner’s manual or the fitment tab on witchdoctors.com to make sure this part fits your specific year, make, and model before ordering.

Pro Tip: Clean Your Rotors

After every muddy ride, power wash your calipers and rotors thoroughly. Trapped mud is the #1 cause of premature brake wear. Once dry, a quick spray of brake cleaner will remove any oily residue and keep your stopping power sharp.
