With a single cold, calculated press release, Polaris Industries executed Victory Motorcycles. In an instant, nineteen years of American engineering brilliance, broken boundaries, and fierce rider devotion were tossed into the corporate incinerator.

For those who rolled a Vegas, a Hammer, or a massive Vision out of a dealership showroom, Victory wasn't just another motorcycle brand. It was an identity. It was a declaration that an American heavy cruiser didn't have to rely on oil leaks, ancient pushrod geometry, and mid-century nostalgia just to have soul. Victory gave us performance. They gave us reliability. And then, Polaris killed it to feed an expensive ghost.

The bitterest pill to swallow is that Polaris forced Victory to compete with one arm tied behind its back. They parked both brands on the exact same dealership floors, forcing a civil war. Victory got minimal marketing support, while Indian received massive global rollouts and endless corporate attention.

When the axe finally fell on January 9, 2017, the corporate suits blamed shifting markets and product development costs. The financial numbers tell a cold story, but they don't capture the heartbreak:

The ultimate insult? Polaris promised ten years of parts and service support for Victory owners. Now, that window has officially closed. We were left to keep our machines alive on our own, scavenging for parts while watching the corporate machine walk away completely clean.


4. The Ultimate Irony: Victory's Stolen Bloodline

Look closely at the modern Indian line. Look past the classic badges and the retro marketing. What do you see when you look at an Indian Challenger, a Scout, or the aggressive FTR?

You are looking at a Victory in a heritage costume. The high-performance, liquid-cooled PowerPlus engine, the rigid cast-aluminum chassis, and the carving frame geometries are all direct structural evolutions of the engineering lessons learned from Victory's experimental projects like the Project 156 and the short-lived Octane.

The irony grew even sharper when Polaris completely severed ties with the heavyweight cruiser industry. In an ultimate corporate twist, Polaris completed the separation of Indian Motorcycle. They sold off their majority ownership stake to the private equity firm Carolwood LP, handing the keys to a standalone operation under new CEO Mike Kennedy.

The company that killed Victory to sustain its on-road division ended up liquidating its presence in heavy motorcycles anyway to double down on side-by-sides and snowmobiles. Victory gave them the engineering power, Indian gave them a premium badge to sell off to Wall Street, and the riders who built that foundation were left holding the bag.

Got a 2014 8ball in Nov 2013 cuz Harley’s cost to much and mine used to blow up every 13k any way. 8 ball best bike I ever had and I’m 74 and been riding for 50+ years. I’ll ride it until either it dies or I do. Shameful what Polaris did.

I have a 2016 Victory Cross country. If I were to buy another motorcycle it would not be an Indian. I would but a Harley or a Honda.

2015 Cross Country, 45,000 mi. on her since I bought it and nothing but tires, oil, a few cac. lines and plugs n besides mods and tune. Looked at newer bikes but I love this one too damn much. Also owned a 2007 Kinpin, great bike too.
Who cares what Polaris did, that’s what greedy companies do. I got a sweet bike out of them before it was too late. Even if there was a new one on the show room floor I doubt I’d get rid of this one.

Purchased used 2007 Kingpin steel frame. Read plenty before making the choice and really happy with my choice. The sell was not buying parts! They are available but not convenient. The sell was 2 things the 07 still looks like a classic cruiser with all the accessories stripped away and it is almost impossible to find a negative read on any of the models and years and the ones I did find were on the earliest production products. This is a great riding MC

My Kingpin is precision, not sloppy like other V twins. I don’t have to carry extra parts just in case. I change the oil between 3500 to 5000 miles. I’ve got 72000 miles on it now and imo it looks better than when I first bought it. No dings or scratches. I clean it after every ride. I’m 78 years old. I’m a chapter member of a large motorcycle association and I I’ve ridden my Kingpin out to the Rocky Mountains several times from northern Illinois.I ride about 5 to seven thousand miles during the summer months and I’m called a fair weather rider. I’ve never had any type of trouble with my bike. I trust it will never fail me. I hope if something needs to be replaced that I’ll be able to find it. My only complaint is that I wish it had two shock absorbers instead of the mono shock. Not a big deal. I put an ass saver cushion on the seat and that actually calms down the ride. I love my Victory Kingpin !
