Riding season is here. Before you hit the starter button for that first big spring ride, take 30 minutes to run through this professional-grade inspection. A bike that sits all winter needs more than just a wash—it needs a safety audit.

1. The "Lifeblood" Check (Fluids & Filters)

Effects of Contaminated Motor Oil on Engine Performance

Static oil can collect moisture (condensation) over the winter, and old fuel can gum up injectors.

  • [ ] Engine Oil & Filter: Check levels. If the oil looks milky or hasn't been changed in 3,000 miles, swap it now.

  • [ ] Coolant Levels: (Indian Scout/Challenger/Pursuit) Ensure the reservoir is between the lines. Check hoses for "bulging" or cracks.
  • [ ] Air Filter: Remove the cover. Look for rodent nests (common in winter storage) or heavy dust buildup.
  • [ ] Fuel System: Inspect fuel lines for cracks. If you didn't use a stabilizer, consider draining the tank and adding fresh 91+ octane.

2. The "Stop & Go" Check (Controls & Braking)

Brake fluid is hygroscopic (absorbs water), which can lead to a "mushy" lever or internal corrosion.

  • [ ] Brake Pads: Use a flashlight to check the remaining "meat" on the pads. If they are at 2mm or less, replace them.
  • [ ] Brake Fluid: Check the sight glass on the master cylinder. If the fluid is dark (like maple syrup), it’s time for a flush. Witchdoctors.com brake fluid test strips can help determine the condition of the fluid.
  • [ ] Throttle & Clutch Cables: Ensure the throttle snaps back freely. Inspect clutch cables for fraying at the lever end. Lubricate if necessary.
  • [ ] Brake Lines: Squeeze the levers hard and look for any "sweating" or leaks at the crimp points.

3. The "Foundation" Check (Tires & Wheels)

Rubber hardens and loses pressure when sitting on cold concrete all winter.

  • [ ] Tire Pressure (PSI): Set to factory specs (Check your swingarm or owner's manual).
  • [ ] Tread Depth: Check for the "wear bars." Look for "flat spotting" or dry rot (cracking) in the sidewalls.
  • [ ] Final Drive:
    • [ ] Victory/Indian Belt: Check for debris, "chunking" of teeth, or improper tension.
    • [ ] Indian Chain (Scout/FTR): Clean, lube, and check for tight links.

4. The "Electrical" Check (Battery & Lights)

Modern Indian and Victory electronics are sensitive to voltage drops.

  • [ ] Battery Cables & Terminals: Check for white/blue corrosion. Ensure the 10mm bolts are tight (vibration looses them!).
  • [ ] Load Test: If the bike struggles to turn over, your battery may have "sulfated" over the winter.
  • [ ] The Light Show: Test High/Low beams, front/rear turn signals, and the brake light (using both the hand lever and foot pedal).

5. The "Final Walkaround" (Chassis & Safety)

  • [ ] Fasteners: Check critical bolts: Floorboards, kickstand spring, and axle nuts.
  • [ ] Suspension: Wipe down fork tubes. Look for oil rings that indicate a blown fork seal.
  • [ ] Mirrors & Mirror Mounts: Ensure they are tight and offer a clear field of view.
