Fitment and Compatibility

Listed for 7 Yamaha Grizzly 660 model configurations from 2003-2008, including Yamaha YFM660F Grizzly 4x4 2003-2004 and Yamaha YFM660FA Grizzly 4x4 2005-2008. Use the fitment tool on this page to confirm your exact year, model and trim.

Axles are position-specific. This one is listed for the Rear Left. Check the position against your machine and the old axle before ordering.

Signs You Need a New Axle

  • Clicking or popping when turning under power
  • Vibration that gets worse with speed
  • Grease slung around the inside of the wheel from a torn boot
  • Excessive play or clunking when you rock the axle by hand
  • A bent shaft after a hit on a rock or stump

Standard vs. OEM Replacement vs. Heavy Duty

Moose Utility axles come in several lines. Standard axles are OEM-style replacements for everyday work and trail riding. OEM Replacement CV axles use heat-treated chromoly internals built to exceed stock quality. Heavy Duty axles are made for bigger tires, lift kits and more aggressive riding. If you have added tires more than one or two sizes over stock, or a lift, consider a heavy-duty axle.

Installation

Support the machine safely, remove the wheel, loosen the spindle nut and separate the knuckle or lower ball joint as your service manual describes. Pull the old axle from the differential, check the seal, and slide the new axle in until the retaining clip seats. Torque the spindle nut to spec and install a new cotter pin where used.

Pro Tip

Check the differential seal while the axle is out. A leaking seal is cheap to replace now and can ruin a new axle’s inner joint later.

Care and Maintenance

Inspect the CV boots after every few rides, especially after mud, brush or rocks. A small tear lets in dirt and water that destroy the joint quickly. Wash the boots off after muddy rides and consider axle or CV boot guards if you ride in rocks or heavy brush.
